‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 spoilers: The not-expanding universe?
After seeing so many seasons of “Game of Thrones” that have put the focus mostly on giving you so many different stories across a broad landscape, isn’t it going to be nice to see something a little bit different for a change?
As you saw at the end of season 4 with Stannis and Jon Snow, this massive world that we have come to know is starting to slowly and surely close in on itself. This is not going to be an instant process by any means, and it may not be until we reach the final seasons of the show that things start to narrow down.
This is something that was addressed fully in co-showrunner David Benioff’s recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, where he made it clear that this long-expanding world for these characters may not be expanding much longer:
“It almost feels like this is the midpoint for us. If we’re going to go seven seasons, which is the plan, season 4 is right town the middle. It’s the pivot point, as you say. It’s been an expanding universe and will now start to contract. Which doesn’t mean we won’t meet any new characters in season 5, because we will. But it’s going to start to shrink for sure.”
It is also interesting in this interview that Benioff and fellow showrunner D.B. Weiss still expect the show to be done with its seventh season, despite the fact that it is possible George R.R. Martin could have an eighth book. Given that they are in some ways right now a season behind, their work is definitely cut out for them.
