TV Quick Hits: Chelsea Handler to Netflix, ‘Gotham’ trailer, Mindy Kaling to announce Emmys
Chelsea Handler officially joins Netflix – Remember those supposedly-false rumors about Chelsea Handler teaming up with Netflix? Well, they certainly do not appear to be anywhere near as false anymore!
The soon-to-be-ex-host of “Chelsea Lately” will launch a talk show with the streaming service in early 2016, and that comes after she will do four “docu-comedy” specials next year along with a straight stand-up special to get back to her roots. This move allows her more freedom than she ever had at E!, but how well can a talk show do when it is not appointment viewing? We’re about to see.
In a statement, Handler had the following to say about this new collaboration:
“If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested … I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move. I’m more excited than I’ve been in awhile, and the team at Netflix is the most forward thinking, alert group I’ve sat down with in ages. No offense to the Shahs Of Sunset.”
“Gotham’s” villains – The new teaser-trailer for “Gotham” is downright awesome, mostly in that it gives us a first look at some of the new villains on the show, including the crime boss played by Jada Pinkett Smith and also the younger versions of the Penguin and Catwoman. Somehow, we’re even more excited about seeing this show after watching this.
Emmy announcers – Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly have been hired to reveal the nominations for the 2014 Emmy Awards, which will be at 8:40 a.m. on July 10. (For them, it will be at 5:40 in the morning, and we feel for them for that.) The good news is that Emmy presenters often find themselves getting a little love for nominations, and both could be up for an award.
