2014 Teen Choice Awards: Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, ‘Supernatural’ all snubbed
Can we all give a big “what gives?” to the Teen Choice Awards this year? Given the way that these awards are selected, we would want to assume that “Supernatural” would be represented pretty well on there.
Alas, this year it was not to be, and both the series as well as stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles were snubbed from the main announcement that came out earlier today. The good news is that there are still opportunities coming up for them to be nominated courtesy of the next wave that comes out. (This awards show tends to have more categories than there are people in small countries). However, seeing this change to us is still somewhat surprising.
There are a few simple reasons for the snub this year when you stop and think about it:
- Demographics – While there may have been many teens watching “Supernatural” in the early years, this is a show entering its 10th go-around on TV. Therefore, most of the viewers probably are not even teens anymore. They support the show, but may care about other things than this show.
- Vampires – “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” meanwhile, have enormous teen audiences. In between Joseph Morgan, Ian Somerhalder, and Paul Wesley, that is a good 60% of the nominees in this particular category. Tyler Posey of “Teen Wolf” is on a show with similar themes, and while the tone of “Once Upon a Time” may be somewhat different, the show (which Josh Dallas is nominated for) still has a pretty young following on average.
- Just more options – Remember here that Stephen Amell also was snubbed for “Arrow,” which was as equal of a surprise to us as anything else.
Were you shocked by the lack of “Supernatural” love with the nominees today? Share your thoughts with a comment.

I think the aging factor is a major player. Supernatural is really dark now and really doesn’t have story lines that teens like to follow, e.g., romance and sexual tension. In fact, it seems a little odd that the show ever was nominated for teen awards. Even from the beginning when the actors got more publicity (and therefore fans) it seemed an odd show for young viewers. As the story lines have gotten progressively darker I think the young ones have left. And that’s okay.

Think it might have something to do with episodes that were heavily disliked among many other factors?
I love SPN, but this season was far from award winning.
