’24: Live Another Day’ spoilers: Series boss on President Heller’s big move
For the 200th episode of “24: Live Another Day,” the series went in a somewhat more emotional direction than they have as of late. Rather than really doing that much to create an action-packed thrill ride, they showed you early on President Heller staring into the face of death, and then constant questions about whether or not there was a way for him to make it through an attack from Margot Al-Harazi.
The anticipation throughout the episode was all about waiting for the shocking and the inevitable: The death of one of the series’ most-notable political figures to date. Speaking to TV Guide, show executive producer Manny Coto effectively confirmed that Heller’s death is pretty “cut and dry,” despite the fact that we never really saw any of his remains on the show. He then went on to explain why he chose to sacrifice his life in the first place so that a terrorist could have a win:
“When Heller invokes the fact that he is ill, that he has Alzheimer’s and he is fading away, that makes Jack stop. Heller’s reasoning is actually not a bad one in the sense that, “I only have a certain amount of time left. And if I live, more people will die. … If I could prevent that, what am I really giving up? I’m giving up a couple years — maybe one more year of lucidity.” [In Heller’s mind] it’s worth the trade.”
The obvious question that comes out of this, though, is one inherently tied deeply to trust. Can we legitimately believe that a woman like Margot is going to actually hold true to her word and not inflict any further damage. This is going to be a very difficult thing to grasp onto moving forward.
