‘MasterChef’ season 5, episode 4 review: A donut delight

“MasterChef” may have had its best episode of the season on Monday night, mostly because it got rid of the predictable team challenges and focused more on what we like the best: Mystery boxes that are fun and interesting, and then an elimination challenge that had a great premise and allowed some memorable contestants to rise to the occasion.

Ahran was the winner of the seafood-themed mystery box, which gave her safety, and also an opportunity to to name someone else safe based on who she wanted … and she picked Francis B! Basically, she spared a guy from elimination who made some terrible choices during the challenge and may have been going home.

For some reason, we were particularly thrilled to see that both “Scottish Francis” (who is positively insane and that is why we love him so) and Leslie were in the top two, with the latter being declared the winner on the night. He had literally created donut shop quality treats without having any idea what they were doing.

Despite all of the fun that we had here and how much we wanted a donut at the end of this, the end result was still somewhat predictable. Cutter had been in the bottom before, but he had gotten a ton of screen time. Also, they were not going to eliminate Courtney after she has brought so much drama to the show this season. Kira of course eliminated at the end of the episode, and we barely saw her much of the season. No surprise here, and that was the weakest part of an episode that we still found pretty darn delectable.
