John Oliver’s ‘Last Week Tonight’ piece on net neutrality seemingly crashes FCC commenting

Last Week Tonight -Remember all of those studies saying that comedy shows are becoming a valuable source of news for many young people, even more so at times than your standard, regular news broadcasts? Well, we may have even more evidence of this now courtesy of what happened on “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” Sunday.

During the show, Oliver ran a lengthy piece regarding the issue of net neutrality, and actually probably did a better job explaining the players involved in it than most major news outlets have. In addition to all of this, he also shared the URL for the official FCC website, and rallied all of the trolls out there who spend their time going after ridiculous things on the internet to actually combine their power and blast the organization for even considering a policy that would make it harder on small businesses.

Well, it is safe to say that the FCC certainly got a lot of comments, judging from the fact that they posted the message below to their Twitter account:

We’ve been experiencing technical difficulties with our comment system due to heavy traffic. We’re working to resolve these issues quickly.”

Nowhere does the organization say that Oliver’s segment may be the actual source of the problem … but let’s be honest here, since we all for the most part know that it was. This is the not the sort of thing that would ultimately go down unless there was a massive influx of traffic coming to the site that wasn’t there previously.

What do you think about the apparent result of Oliver’s video, and do you think that this is actually going to change anything in the long run? Let us know below, and click here if you do have an interest in more TV updates from our CarterMatt Newsletter.
