‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 6 debate: Where does Alaric fit in the picture?

The latest -Understandably, most of the past several weeks have been spent by many “Vampire Diaries” fans trying to digest and handle the fact that Damon and Bonnie are seemingly no longer with us. In so many ways, we understand this. They are each beloved characters, and the idea of the show without them feels a little hollow.

Due to the hysteria surrounding this, though, we feel almost like something else has been lost in the shuffle a little bit: The fact that we still have an awesome return to the show in Alaric Saltzman! He was always a personal favorite of ours in that he was one of the few adult figures in Mystic Falls fully aware of everything, and he was a genuinely friend to Damon that he didn’t have anywhere else. Matt Davis went and did “Cult” and some appearances on “CSI,” and now he is back to see what Alaric could bring to the table this time.

So what do we want to see from the character? We’ve come up with a few humble suggestions.

1. Grounding the series – By our estimation, the past two seasons have really become far too insane, and there have been moments where you wonder if the series even remembers that it was originally at one point about the people more so than all of the supernatural elements surrounding them. Bringing Alaric back gives you another human element, and someone who understands what matters in life.

2. Getting back to hunting – Remember those days? While Alaric shouldn’t be going after the good guys, we would like to see him kicking butt and taking names of some of the vampires who really deserve it.

3. Becoming a leader in Mystic Falls – At this point, it seems like one of the best people to be in charge of running the town would be someone who actually knows everything that is going on in the town. By our estimation, Alaric is a good candidate for that.
