‘Britain’s Got Talent’ draws lowest live ratings to date; why?

Earlier this season, there were many of us out there doing nothing but singing the praises of “Britain’s Got Talent” for being able to draw such fantastic ratings in the early going. Now, we’re talking about some news that is basically the opposite of that.

The live shows last week saw a steady decline in viewership from one episode to the next, and the Saturday edition drew less than 7.8 million eyeballs, the lowest rating for a live episode to date. So what happened to turn so many people off on the show? We imagine it to be a combination of things.

1. Commercials – Thanks to the BBC, British viewers have gotten somewhat spoiled by getting to watch good programming without ads in the middle of it. If this was America, the number of advertisements here would be commonplace.

2. Boring acts – It’s not so much that the acts this year are bad, but the judges are making them out to be better than they probably are.

3. Talent show fatigue – This is just happening all around the world right now. People are having a hard time buying into the search for the next star, especially when few of these acts actually end up becoming stars in the end.

The final for the show airs next weekend, and that will probably help the ratings bounce back a little given that it is not airing directly after all of the other shows this year for a change. For the sake of quality and also of fairness, we are very happy to see that this shift has been made.
