‘Britain’s Got Talent’ review: Jack Pack, Jenson Zhu, Bailey McConnell among surprises
Tonight, “Britain’s Got Talent” wrapped up its final semifinal show with something that was far and away better than the majority of the other episodes. For the first time, we felt like there were a number of acts that could go through to the next round that we’d be happy about. We’d blame the schedules for this, but who would’ve predicted that someone like Jenson Zhu would come out and actually kill?
As with every other one of our reviews, we’re going to look at the acts in order from least-favorite to overall favorite on the night.
9. Andrew Derbyshire – The moment that Andrew started singing “Listen,” we were over it. The song is so generic and boring. He’s a good singer, but you need to sing something that is actually invigorating to listen to.
8. Kings and Queens – We actually agree a little bit with Simon Cowell here. The dancing was good, but the arrangement was too much of a hodgepodge. They should have focused more on an individual style and telling that story.
7. Peat Loaf and Elaine – The funny thing is that this was about as good of a Meat Loaf tribute performance as you are going to get. We just would’ve preferred something different from the audition, but we understand doing the same song that is so popular.
6. Kieran Lai – Kieran looked like a dancing Commander Shepard from “Mass Effect,” but his dance was unfortunately not out of this world. He should have went out there without the backup dancers and done something without the production values.
5. La Voix and the London Gay Big Band – This was so camp and completely fun. It’s not going to win the competition, but we see this dominating a nightclub scene somewhere.
4. Paddy & Nico – Here is the thing about Paddy & Nico. If you listen to the judges’ critiques, there wasn’t much actually said about their dance quality. There were mistakes in the routine, and if you take away Paddy’s age and the injury that she suffered, this would have been a weaker ballroom routine. It doesn’t take away from this being an inspirational story, but the talent portion of this competition is being a little forgotten.
3. Jenson Zhu – This was the surprise of the night. He was a complete trainwreck, but also completely hilarious. The crowd loved him, and we actually wouldn’t mind if he was around again for another round.
2.Bailey McConnell – A very nice performance from Bailey! Was it something that we’re going to remember for ages? That is doubtful, but we’d rather have a kid his age who is writing and performing than doing karaoke.
1. Jack Pack – It takes some huge guts to perform “My Way,” one of Frank Sinatra’s biggest songs at this point in the competition. Not only that, but the guys killed it. This is potentially a million-dollar act. It’s our favorite in the competition right now, and we can see it having commercial success.
