‘Britain’s Got Talent’ review: James Smith, Jodi Bird solid; Ed Drewett disappoints
Tonight’s “Britain’s Got Talent” performance show was a little bit more like a dirge. We saw a really good act leave last night in impressionist Jon Clegg, and he was better than everyone who performed on the show tonight from start to finish. The judges tried desperate to hype the last act of the night, but it was to very little avail as he was yet another kid singer who didn’t bring a whole lot new to the table.
As always with these reviews, we are ranking the acts in order from worst to first.
9. Kony Puppets – This was horrendous in the auditions, and we would much rather see Christian Spridon dance around to “Sex Bomb” for an hour non-stop than have to deal with two more minutes of this.
8. Mini Moves – Very cute, but not exactly that talented or special. Their only real appeal comes from being youngsters who can dance.
7. SweetChix – This is a group that really needed “The X Factor” rather than this. Simon Cowell’s right that there is potential, but they won’t get to show that over the next two live shows.
6. Ricky K – Slightly better than Simon gave him credit for. His major problem is that once you’ve seen it, there is nothing altogether special about it.
5. Ed Drewett – The reason that Ed is a songwriter rather than a singer was made apparent tonight. He didn’t deviate at all from his audition, and really just doesn’t have that great of a voice. He clearly has a career still in this industry, but not in what he wants.
4. The Addict Initiative – A very good dance team, even if they basically did the same thing as Ed and did a number that felt very familiar to everything that they have shown already.
3. James Smith – He closed the night and won effusive praise from the judges, but did anyone else think that this was more them trying to make this show look better than he was? He was not bad by any means, but this was hardly revolutionary.
2. Jodi Bird – Hats off to Jodi for doing a surprisingly great rendition of “Let It Go” that was both in her wheelhouse and current at the same time.
1. Bolddog FMX Stunt Team – When it comes to being masters at what they do, there was no one better tonight. The problem here is that rather than making themselves work for the show, the show has to work for them. That won’t quite work for the Royal Variety.
