Memorial Day Weekend TV: Is ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Mad Men,’ or ‘Silicon Valley’ new tonight?
Memorial Day Weekend is always a tough one when it comes to TV, given that the Sunday beforehand is practically another Saturday, and that is notoriously the worst day of the year as far as new programming goes.
With all this in mind, it should not shock you that a pretty hefty percentage of your favorite TV shows are in repeats. When it comes to HBO, for example, there will be no “Game of Thrones” tonight as it, “Silicon Valley,” and “Veep” make way for the special presentation of “The Normal Heart.” Playing a miniseries at this time is something that HBO viewers should be familiar with at this point, given that the network previously did something similar last year with “Behind the Candelabra.”
As for some other networks, most of the networks are over and done with their regular programming for at least the next few weeks before they start to introduce their own summer lineups (June is a pretty tricky month thanks to that). Meanwhile, AMC is still going to play the midseason finale of “Mad Men,” and Showtime is going to be running their lineup of “Penny Dreadful” and more. While HBO may be doing what they are, there is still incentive for premium cable programs to air new episodes. They know that viewers wealthy enough to pay per month to watch these shows also have the capabilities to use such things as DVRs and on-demand services, so there is nothing to worry about when it comes to whether or not they are going to get left behind at some point.
