‘Once Upon a Time’ season 3, episode 20 review: Rumpelstiltskin and Belle’s moment, death, and drama
Sunday night’s “Once Upon a Time” episode “Kansas” by and large continued the tradition of being fantastic, but also continued to do one other thing: Frustrate us with the inability of some characters to change.
When we are saying this, we are of course speaking mostly about the Rumpelstiltskin character first and foremost. This is a guy who has gotten a new lease on life thanks to Belle, and therefore has been allowed many more chances than someone who does terrible things really should be given. He had a chance to move on after Zelena was captured, and not do anything to her! Unfortunately, he decided instead that this was not okay with that. He gave Belle a fake dagger and even a marriage proposal as a show of “trust,” and then went over to kill a powerless Zelena after Regina used the powers of good in order to ensure that she could no longer hurt anyone.
It is fair to say that this will be a game-changer for the Rumbelle relationship when she finds out … but we’ll see what happens from here. Is Zelena really dead? That, for one, is an interesting question. If nothing else, her spell to turn back time is still active, and that could mean a return. Given how amazing Rebecca Mader is, we certainly wouldn’t mind if the producers found a way to get her back! Just putting that out there.
Our favorite part of this episode was actually the flashbacks to Oz, mostly because it was such a great bit of fan service for the Dorothy story, and there were great tongue-in-cheek moments regarding the “ruby slippers,” Zelena melting, and other fun things from the L. Frank Baum book.
While we don’t necessarily understand Rumple’s gameplan here to be evil again, and also what in the world is going on with that spell, we have to admit that we were very entertained. The fact that we’re just now getting around to mentioning Snow and Charming’s baby boy is proof of that. Grade: B+.

End to Rumbelle? Thank God. I never liked that ship. It’s been the most inappropriate of the entire series. She can’t love him for himself. She wants more adventure. He can’t see past…well… his past. He’s the only character that might get Emma’s abandonment and parent issues and she his (a better ship imo).
Yes. Please let Rumbelle die a grand death so Belle can go off and have a relationship with a dashing young adventurer like she dreamed once upon a time and Rumplestiltskin can have a relationship with someone who will call him out on all of his crap and yet still understand and want to be with him (i.e. Emma).
