White House Correspondents Dinner: Joel McHale skewers Hillary Clinton, Rob Ford, more

The latest -After President Obama performed at the White House Correpondents Dinner Saturday, it was time for the main event of the night: Joel McHale. The “Community” star appeared ready to go after almost anyone and everyone … at least so long as they were Republican.

We’ll start by saying that we are a big-time fan of Joel, and “Community” is our favorite comedy on TV right now. Unfortunately, this wasn’t a great night for Joel from start to finish. Many of jokes fell flat in the early going, and it took a good while for the audience to understand how harsh he was. He was a little too slanted with his targets, and probably should have gone after some more liberals to go along with conservatives.

Here are some of Joel’s targets from the evening.

  • Chris Christie – The best thing we can say about Christie is that he was game to be mocked, and laughed at some of Joel’s many jokes.
  • Bill O’Reilly – Joel mocked O’Reilly, claimed that he had ghostwriters, and then talked more about Fox News. Little laughter.
  • “Duck Dynasty” – We’re sure that the Robertsons loved that Joel brought up the comments from Phil Robertson.
  • Biz Stone – A nice little reminder that politicians do bad things on Twitter.

In the end, Joel was the harshest comic on the show, and his entire segment on the state of America completely bombed. If it had been a little bit shorter and had attacked everyone equally, we’d compare it more to Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes. That was so biting and brilliant we’ve watched it many times over.
