‘Britain’s Got Talent’ review: Meet Eva Iglesias, Jack Pack, REAformed, and Patsy May
“Britain’s Got Talent” may actually not have all that much in talent this year, but it tends to make up for it with entertainment. We were laughing hysterically at one of the worst celebrity impersonators ever, enjoying David Walliams and his playful banter, and of course cheering when there was the occasional genuinely good act that came on stage. Ironically, one of our favorites this time was actually a puppet.
Since we do not necessarily have the patience to sit here and discuss most of the awful acts that were on the show this time around, we’re going to try to put more focus on the good … or at least the ones who made it through to the next round.
Patsy May – Our favorite part of this performance was actually that Simon Cowell didn’t force the puppeteer to come out from the shadows. Like Kermit the Frog, Patsy was allowed to be her own character, and show whatever talent that she has. Luckily, she happened to be a very good character. Not only was she a pretty good singer, but the improv skills and the humor were to-notch. This felt like a professional character.
Christian Farla – We remain a major fan of magic acts when they are done right. He is not the best this season, but there was at least charisma and a few good tricks … even if the whole “cover with a sheet” trick is done by almost every magician out there.
REAformed – Let’s not pretend that this was the best girl group ever. They’ve only performed once together publicly before this show! There’s still something here that could come out of them if they stay a part of the show long enough … but they would be better off on “The X Factor” than here.
Would we have given them the golden buzzer as Alesha Dixon? Maybe not, mostly because we feel like they were probably going to go to the semifinals anyway and could’ve done well with the pressure of working hard to get there.
Kieran Lai – In a post Kenichi Ebina world, it is hard to impress us with a dance act that revolves around similar dance styles. He did at least come with a story and imagination, and if he continues that, there’s a shot for him to be the British version of Kenichi.
Jenson Zhu – Jenson is terrible, but also kind of funny. There was not a good impression in the bunch, but we rather enjoyed his bizarre character and offbeat sense of humor made us smile. There’s no way he wins, but we expect him to be put in the live shows.
Jack Pack – A sensational act. Four good-looking guys with great voices that can be like Frank Sinatra in group form. No joke, but we think that these guys can actually be some big stars. They just need to get far enough here and do a great second performance on the live shows.
Eva Iglesias – Eva was a very good singer, but this package did something we really don’t like: Focusing on a sob story after she was done performing. To us, it’s so much more empowering to see someone come out there and just sing their face off, without having to know everything that they have been through or to make us feel bad for them. She has talent, and that is what matters the most. Episode Grade: B.
