‘The Following’ season 3 spoilers: Boss hints at multiple big bads
“The Following” season 3 is still a long ways from happening, and with that in mind, did you really think that you were going to get a whole lot of information regarding what could be coming up in the future? The writers have yet to work on scripts, and the casting department still needs some time to get to work.
One thing that you can almost certainly expect to see when the show returns is villains … and ones that are not named Joe Carroll. Hooray! No offense to the amazing James Purefoy, but there isn’t really that much more of a story that could be told with Joe running around and killing people while Ryan and the FBI looked like the Keystone Cops going after him.
Executive producer Marcos Siega does tease to The Hollywood Reporter that Joe will still have a role, but it is not going to be the same sort of one that we have seen on the show to date:
“If not one, I think there’s going to be more than one big bad. We like the idea of, again, shaking it up a little bit and we’re going to step outside of the construct of these first two seasons were. These were the Joe Carroll chapters and it’s going to evolve into something else. There will be some new fresh faces coming in.”
We would not rule out the possibility of Joe eventually having a larger part in the story, but it’s hard to imagine that it comes via a breakout from prison a la season 1. Regurgitating old storylines two years after it happened is worthy of some regurgitating itself.
Siega was coy regarding two other major questions in the potential return of Claire to the show (who decided that she wanted to move on and be happy with her kid), and who was behind the wheel of the truck that picked up Luke. This is not the same sort of insane cliffhanger that we had at the end of season 1; we actually much prefer this, even if a good percentage of season 2 was worthy of some eye-rolls.
