Tonight on the BBC, the network premiered a new drama series entitled “Happy Valley” that really could not have used that adjective in a way that was other than ironic. It was a dark series that focused on Catherine Cawood, a police sergeant who struggled to cope with the fact that the man who caused her daughter to commit suicide was now on the loose. Some of that pain started to manifest on the series premiere, and it is only going to build from there.
Catherine showed a side that was definitely beyond what you see from the average officer during this episode, and for the next episode, there will be many more shocks as the investigation continues. The BBC already released a short synopsis for the next episode, and you can see that below:
“Catherine’s search for Tommy gains momentum when she receives a tip-off regarding his whereabouts. Helen absorbs the shock of hearing that Ann has been abducted.”
What the challenge for this series is going to be is ultimately something rather simple: Trying to find a way to leverage the action that we have seen already, and turn it into something more than your average police serial. There are so many of these series around the world, and even with strong characters, it can be difficult to find something in here that stands apart from the mold. Given that there are only six episodes to this series, the network is going to have to figure this all out sooner rather than later.
