Ratings watch: ‘The Mentalist,’ ‘Revenge,’ ‘Resurrection’ see renewal chances dinged
The bad news continues for some shows that are firmly on the bubble, and while you expect ratings to teeter down a little bit in the spring months (there’s actually an option for people to go outside), you traditionally hope that the damage is not so bad that it actually keeps you from coming back.
At this point in the spring, we’re not really going to waste much time discussing the shows that are officially coming back for another season. This is more about the ones that really need the help in any way possible.
“The Mentalist” – With a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is poor even if the show continues to post nearly nine million viewers, things are not looking good for the show on CBS. Most of the network’s other dramas (save for “Intelligence”) have already been renewed for another season, and the network is losing hours for the fall. We still hope that Patrick Jane will return, but it may not be on its original network.
“Revenge” – Even though “Revenge” didn’t fare any better with a 1.2 last night, the odds are better for it to return for a number of reasons. For one, ABC Studios owns the show, so there’s an incentive to keep airing it. Also, one more season gets it to syndication, and they can bill it as the final season to drum up more excitement for Emily’s final showdown.
“Resurrection” – ABC made a mistake giving the show a week off, since its 1.9 rating marks a new series low. We still feel decent about its renewal prospects, mostly thanks to the numbers it pulled early on, and that it is only an eight-episode series. That is a perfect length to be some sort of fill in for shows that are canceled in the fall or spring.
We’ll of course have some more ratings updates every step of the way when it comes to series that are on the bubble. If you want some more updates from us sent to your email, sign up now for our official newsletter.

This show is amazing. The issues it deals with, the characters and how they interact, the fun, the intensity and acting in some scenes are so touching. I want to see more of the story develop. Smart people like Jane, who struggle to express their feelings. Bad liars, like Lisbon, who cover their feelings with pride. This is such a diverse show that I would really miss it. I hope a network, or TNT pick it up and put it in a more accessible time-slot.
Most of the 18-49 age-group has to work on Mondays, so if the show is delayed they are likely not to watch it live. Also when you watch it on-demand later, the player does not always work and stops before the episode ends. It is all very frustrating.
58 millions people watch this show world-wide – The Mentalist won an award earlier this year for the most watched show. But this apparently is less important than the 18-49 demographic’s ratings in the USA.

Boy am I sick and tired of hearing about the 18-49 demographic’s ratings. I am just a little over 49 and I don’t see why I don’t matter. I love The Mentalist and want to see it renewed!!!!! My younger than 18 year old child watches it also and apparently that doesn’t count either. My over 18 year old is away at college and very very busy and can’t always catch the show but apparently that fact plays into the “important” ratings. This just sucks!!!! COME ON CBS RENEW THE MENTALIST FOR THOSE OF US OVER 49 AND UNDER 18 WE LOVE THE SHOW AND WE SHOULD MATTER TOO!!!!
