‘Mad Men’ season 7, episode 3 review: Is Don Draper back with SC&P … and with Megan?
Sunday night’s “Mad Men” episode brought the biggest movement of the entire season so far when it comes to the story, as Don Draper is getting closer than ever to becoming the Don Draper of old. As to whether or not that is a good thing, though … that is firmly up for debate.
Don’s journey started with him finally confessing to Megan that he hadn’t been working at SC&P ever since she moved to Los Angeles, which finally led to the all-important question being asked: What has he been doing all this time? Why not move away from the city to be with your wife? No amount of “I love you” statements can get that back … not even Don getting his old job back.
Don’s return to SC&P was in some ways pathetic, since we had to watch Don stumble his way through the firm and get the cold shoulder from almost everyone in the firm. Cutler acted like he wanted to take Don outside and shoot him, while at least Cooper and Sterling (who invited him back) were somewhat more receptive.
At least this was a realistic “Don returns to the firm” episode, and not just one where he was able to flutter back in like nothing ever happened. We almost wanted him to say no to the partners’ list of demands for him (which includes less drinking and not being alone with the clients), but he didn’t. He’s back, but we will see how long that lasts.
As for the Betty story, what in the world was that all about? It was her smoking on the school bus, and then being upset for hours upon hours about a sandwich. A sandwich! This is the most upset we’ve ever seen anyone about a sandwich.
In the end, we still enjoyed this episode tremendously despite how confused we were at times by Betty. Don and Megan’s future is bleak, but he at least seems to have back what he wanted. Grade: A-.
