‘Britain’s Got Talent’ review: Bailey McConnell, Mickey Damoulin, Kings and Queens rock
For Saturday’s “Britain’s Got Talent,” we felt like the producers were intent on giving us a little bit of everything out there … from the weird (a guy doing Irish dancing with a brush) to the very good (a young singer with a guitar). All of this served as enough evidence to us that the show really should return to Belfast at some point in the future, rather than just having it be a once-in-a-decade sort of affair.
We’re going to mostly ignore the rubbish in this review, mostly because we really cannot bring ourselves to writing about someone who goes on the stage and then spends most of their act hiding behind a trunk. These are more of the acts that stood out for the right reasons.
Oliver – There were a few moments in this where it felt like this was the most stereotypical act ever. You had a guy from Northern Ireland doing Irish dancing, and also wearing a football uniform.
Innova Irish Dance Company – We previewed this act recently, and mostly poured on the praise for their ability to really do something different than what has been seen on many a talent show time and time again.
Kath Morris – She’s a pretty strong singer, but his biggest problem here is that her song choice was slow, and her performance was simply cabaret.
Mickey Damoulin – “Bring Him Home” wasn’t the right song for Mickey. With his look and his style, he should be doing something upbeat and fun. Plus, he’s a pretty funny guy. While we don’t know just how talented this guys really is (we’ve heard better singers), he has the personality to be someone who does well.
Cartel – It was like watching a boy band perform, without the singing. So basically, it was like watching a boy band perform live. We felt bad for the guy who was 27, since from the moment he said that we imagined Simon telling him that he had to go.
Andrew Derbyshire – An interesting act to us, mostly because Andrew was a guy who probably went too hardcore into this performance. He didn’t just sing his face off; he probably also sang his entire body off as he was getting into this number. We want to see him go further into the competition, mostly out of curiosity of what he is going to do next.
Shakespeare Remix – This is one act that didn’t make it through that we wanted to highlight, mostly because we actually thought Simon was going to push the golden buzzer for them.
Kings and Queens – Personally, we don’t really care to see former contestants who made it far back with a new group, even if we understand that Kai (of Kai & Natalia fame) was far from the only person in this act.
Bailey McConnell – Had Simon been present for this audition, he probably would’ve pushed a golden buzzer for Bailey. It’s exactly what he wants: A young singer / guitarist who he could make into the next Justin Bieber or Ed Sheeran. There was no golden buzzer this week, and we’re fine with that. After all, it makes this show a trifle less predictable. Grade: B.
