NBC’s ‘Community’ season 6 renewal campaign rages on with social media, star support
“Community” is the little TV show that could, and no matter what happens to it, it continually finds a way to survive. Just take a look at some of the following hurdles its overcome: It lost its creator, got back its creator, lost who was easily the biggest name attached to the show in the beginning, lost a rising star in Donald Glover, premiered at midseason for two straight years, and has been forced to compete against “The Big Bang Theory” time and time again.
But, this is where honestly some of the best fans out there start to come into play. This isn’t a case of someone pandering for internet hits; we’ve seen it time and time again through fan art, videos, memes, Reddit posts, and general social-media presence that “Community” fans are diehard and loyal. They even stuck it through the gas-leak season.
So what the show’s studio Sony has been doing this week to promote the show in hopes of a renewal is pretty ingenious: Leveraging the show’s online following to drum up more support. The likes of Joel McHale, Gillian Jacbos, Ken Jeong and more have all taken to social media, posted fake movie posters, and also promoted the #sixseasonsandamovie hashtag. The time to tweet it is every day this week at 3:00 p.m. Eastern, 12:00 p.m. Pacific. Trends have at least shown to be an effective way to pressure networks into making a decision in the past.
The one thing that NBC deserves a little bit of credit for is that they do promote the show better than many online give them credit for. They helped to create behind-the-scenes videos all season long, released funny clips, and we’ve felt in our own reactions over the years that they do love the show and want to support it. The issue has always been ratings, and while its competition is a good excuse given that few others could compete against Sheldon Cooper, numbers are still numbers.
We still feel reasonably hopeful right now that a renewal will happen, but you can never be too confident … that’s when things go to hell and you become like Jeff Winger did while pretending to be Ryan Seacrest.
We’ll have more on the possible “Community” renewal soon, so stay tuned. Also, sign up for further TV updates from our CarterMatt Newsletter.
