‘Veep’ season 3, episode 3 review: ‘Saturday Night Live’ (and childcare) get involved
“Veep” is a show that fancies itself as a risk-taker, but also one that loves to throw in a little bit of pop-culture here and there. That is why our favorite part of the episode from Sunday night may just be the fact that Selina Meyer was at war with “Saturday Night Live” over a sketch that aired on the shocking mocking her … and the only solution to it was for her to go on the show and make things better. See? She’s laughing at herself!
From start to finish, this episode was really just delightful entertainment. There was the game of Selina trying to make a universal child care campaigner feel special, even when she really could care less about what she was doing. The same goes for most of her employees. Kent had no interest in her, Dan repeated the same lines to her time and time again, and Sue treated her like cattle. Putting most of the episode through her lens was a great way to show just what this machine probably looks like to someone in her shoes.
Eventually, Selina satisfied her and almost everyone by pawning off her daughter on the child-care campaign, and this in turn bailed out Mike, who called her a “cow” earlier in the evening in a moment of rage.
But the real pride and joy of “Veep” right now is Jonah. Timothy Simons has become the crown jewel of this show, and watching him routinely fail at everything is hilarious. He’s like TV’s beloved cockroach, and we could literally watch an entire show around his antics at this point. Him losing his entire story that he fought so hard for was excellent, mostly because he’s a terrible person and so easy to root against.
So far, “Veep” has really found its footing into season 3. This was the strongest one of the year so far. Grade: A-.
