‘Britain’s Got Talent’: David Walliams reacts to backlash for saving Christian Spridon
During Saturday’s “Britain’s Got Talent” episode, judge David Walliams continued to solidify his position as one of our favorite people ever when he made what we suppose is a fairly controversial decision: Saving a guy in Christian Spridon who is at his core a pretty awful singer. So why save him? He is somehow very entertaining despite being awful, and you can tell that his very existence irritates Simon Cowell greatly. If there is one thing that we have learned about David, it is that he absolutely lives for doing almost everything in his power to continue to irritate Simon.
This was in our mind a brilliant move. Most genuinely good acts are going to advance to the live round anyway, and David used his on something that would have otherwise had no shot of getting through.
At the end of the show, he tweeted out both the video of this performance, and also the following message that proved that he is, in fact, very self-aware of what he is doing:
“So I think my Golden Buzzer may have been a little controversial… #BGT”
Christian will probably once again be terrible in the live shows, but David recognizes that this is an entertainment show, and the purpose of that is to be entertained. We laughed more in the video below that we have during any moment on a talent show in the past year.
Also, we want to campaign to bring Walliams onto every talent show under the sun … or at least clone him, since he basically plays the role of irritant to the harsh judge even better than Howie Mandel does to Howard Stern on the American version of the show.
