MTV’s ‘Awkward.’ season 4, episode 1 review: Are you still on board Jenna’s journey?
Last season on “Awkward.,” things went completely nuts with Jenna Hamilton undergoing a pretty major meltdown. Things got dark for a long time, but at the end of the day, Jenna did find a way to get out of it and start to get her life back on track.
What a difference a summer makes. The season 4 premiere Tuesday night could have very well doubled for a new pilot, since there were so many new characters, and also college on the horizon.
The show definitely still has its edge despite the departure of Lauren Iungerish, and would actually be willing to wager that this was the filthiest version of the show yet. It was actually much more of a teen “Sex and the City” than “The Carrie Diaries” in between the narration and what was going on with that toothbrush. (Someone seriously needs to burn that thing.) Ming is gone, but Jenna and Matty are still doing the dance while Jake and Tamara fight over the fact that he is not pleasing her in bed the right way.
The only issue that we had through this entire hour and two minutes was the same issue that we felt watching “Community’s” season 5 premiere: Something was missing. “Awkward.” is still a better show than the majority of the other stuff that is out there, but there was just a shift in tone that made the show feel a little more like it was trying too hard rather than feeling natural. We think that will change as the season goes on and it starts to find itself, but for now, we’ll just say that we really appreciated the effort of the premiere .. and also some of the laughs. Grade: B-.

I just realized now that Ming is gone there isn’t Asian, Black, Brown, etc, etc, person on the show. No ethnic or sexual diversity in the characters, and I get a kind of racist vibe off this show. Esp when I consider the seriously characterchur-y Asian mafia in the past seasons. I’m OUT!

You must have not watched the episode then. The two trouble makers making the terrible movie choices? Gay. And don’t forget Lyssa’s new “little” brother.

Hey, I’m not saying that casting for the entire show seem to be run based on a neo-nazi agenda. I’m just saying that all the main & re-occurring characters as of episode 4×01, share no diversity. Also John Waters films aren’t just synonymous or reflective of homosexuality but also that of misfitting & being an freaks or outsider. So those boys might be gay or they might not be, but I seriously doubt the viewer will ever be exposed to any of it, beyond a 2D source of humor. And yes the writers seem to be chastising the hypocrisy of Something, with the Lyssa’s ‘lil’ brother story (God know’s what, maybe its organized religion, racism, etc.), but something about it seems analogous to when a person tells you “Hey I’m not racist, just ask my black friend.” So I’m gonna stick to my guns on this & am Out!
