‘Bates Motel’ season 2, episode 7 preview: Norman Bates in ‘Presumed Innocent’
“Bates Motel” has taken many a dark turn already in its run, but the latest one came Monday night with the reveal that something terrible happened to Cody’s father. Is Norman Bates to blame for it, is it karma for the way he treats his daughter, or something else entirely? While Norman is once again no saint and we all know how this story ends, the show structured what happened to him in a way that it could see as an accident or a deliberate act of rage.
Unfortunately, one of the first photos that we have of the new episode does not give away too much about what is coming up, save for maybe showing another wrinkle of surprise on Emma’s face. She’s a polarizing character, but to us what is interesting about her is at least somewhat similar to what is interesting about many of the characters on the series: She represents a great unknown to Norman, an ideal of what sort of life he could have in the event that he was just a little bit more normal. It’s also yet another representation of what he stands to lose by going over the edge. At the end of the day, it is pretty clear that this moment is coming; it’s just a question of how long the writers and executive producers choose to want to delay it. There are only four more episodes left this season, so they may not be in too great a hurry for the time being.
