‘Arrow’ season 2 spoilers: Series boss on Laurel’s reaction to big Slade moment
We’ve made it no secret at all that when it comes to “Arrow,” we’re not big fans of the Laurel Lance character. As a matter of fact, there are times when we’ve felt like we could do without her. The show victimizes her too often, and we also haven’t quite understood how she, as an attorney, hasn’t quite caught on to what is going on around her.
Is our opinion of her going to change? We cannot predict the future like that, but show executive producer Andrew Kreisberg does believe that what happens in “The Man Under the Hood” and beyond will be enough to change some perceptions about who Katie Cassidy’s character really is. Just check out the new interview he did with TV Guide on the subject of how Laurel reacts to the “revelation” that Oliver Queen is the Arrow:
“Does she actually believe [Slade]? Laurel’s reaction to hearing that news is going to surprise people and it will also validate people’s faith in her character. For all the people who love her, they’ll love her even more. Maybe some of the people who didn’t love her will change their minds.”
IF we were Laurel, there’s probably a part of us that would respond to this with frustration, but maybe at the same time, she could learn through this a thing or two about learning to press on and live without so much fear overtaking her. Could this be the start of her transition into Black Canary? We’re still not ruling out that she inherits the title at some point in the future, even if Sara Lance sticks around. (With that being said, though, there are times right now where we’re suffering from a Lance overload as it is.

Want her DEAD and GONE or just GONE! Don’t care about her at all..She’s a useless character that MOST FANS of the show could do without.
I doubt CW/ARROW will even listen but if they “insist” on keep a CHARACTER like HER, then turn her VILLAIN; that I could STAND to see of her..

I don’t want to see her die, but I do want to see them give her something else to do outside of getting kidnapped, having her apartment trashed 200 times or being a victim.

It’s hard for me to see her being redeemed. I don’t know. I just dislike what they’ve done to her. Like you said… the constant victimization of her character has ruined her for me. I don’t know if I could believe her becoming Black Canary. Outside of that… I don’t even see her use. Her whole purpose is to be rescued. So far, that’s it.

I completely agree, she’s had to be rescued too many times. For me she’s someone who could’ve been a great character – she’s smart and driven, but some how always ends up the victim. It’s tough to watch.

The problem with Laurel right now is that the writers are TELLING us what it’s supposed to be instead of SHOWING us. Her lines are flat. Her scenes are boring as hell and she has zero chemistry with the cast. It’s awful. I like Katie Cassidy but I’m just not feeling her. When a one time character becomes a series regular and fills the missing female void… there’s a problem with your cast.

I don’t disagree with any of that, it’s true and it’s such a same because I do like Katie Cassidy and I think there’s a lot of potential there for her character, it just seems that they don’t know what to do with her. A huge waste of what started out as a strong character idea, but I do think she can be redeemed if they pull her out of the victim role and give her something to do.

I could write a novel about all the reasons I don’t want to see Laurel become Black Canary (I honestly really wouldn’t be bothered if she left the show completely), but to answer your question – What would I like to see?….I would love to see her turn villain, perhaps into a character like ‘White Canary’ from the Birds of Prey comics. That would pit sister against sister and would make an exciting twist. Good chance Arrow has many seasons to come so there are several directions they could take her, even if the writers are determined to make her Black Canary eventually. Although, I don’t see how Laurel could ever magically acquire the abilities Sara already has. Her crucible on the island and years of training with the League of Assassins make her a believable equal with Oliver. A few self-defense classes and a vendetta just aren’t going to cut it. If that’s all it takes, anyone who’s had a few hard knocks in life could become Black Canary.
