‘Britain’s Got Talent’ preview: Will Collabro be the next big sensation?
“Britain’s Got Talent” returns to ITV on Saturday after a substantial amount of time away, and the show looks to be wasting zero time at all making something happen that should be very familiar to many out there: Tricking you into thinking an audition is going to go one way, when in reality it veers into an entirely different course.
This phenomenon is definitely true with the group known as Collabro. In looking like these five guys, you would automatically assume that they would be almost an heir apparent to One Direction. They’re young, have a look that the ladies love, and can sing. The only difference is that they sing musical theatre.
In the video below, the boys perform a version of “Stars” that has the judges raising their eyebrows with success. (Yes, Simon Cowell’s eyebrows do still move.) We’re not going to sit here and say that this has redefined what we think about singers on this show, but it’s worthy of a ticket in the next round of the competition.
The thing we continually worry about when it comes to singing on this show is that in between this, “The X Factor,” and “The Voice” UK, Britain has three competitions that allow singing. Also, Ireland has had its own version of “The Voice” before. There are not that many opportunities out there for a star to really be born who hasn’t appeared on another show already. We’ve seen that with vocalists the past couple of years.
This is why, in the end, we mostly watch for the variety acts.
