‘American Idol XIII’ results: Did CJ Harris, Malaya Watson, or Sam Woolf go home?

The logo -After last night’s woeful “American Idol XIII” performance show, we would’ve been fine if the judges made up for the save by eliminating two people tonight. Also, we’d be happy if they eliminated Randy Jackson as a mentor … but that’s neither here nor there.

What really mattered tonight was finding out just who was going to be the latest person sent home from the competition, and who was going to once again stay safe. You’re probably noticing a pattern here that Jessica Meuse, Alex Preston, and Caleb Johnson are getting very good at avoiding being in danger. This is most likely your top three, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. They’re consistent, have big audiences, and none of them have even felt the danger of waiting until the end of the show.

As for everyone else … this is where the competition really got intense. CJ Harris was yet again in the bottom two, and this raised the question as to if Sam was not benefited from the save at all, or if someone like Malaya Watson could end up being a surprise boot. Malaya (who looked at times like she was going to throw up) ended up joining him.

Of these two, Malaya was the one who deserved to stay the most. For one, she was doing an Ashlee Simpson-like jig while sitting in the bottom two stools; also, she’s been the better of the two. Does she have a flaw? Yes, and it’s called “singing way too loudly.” But the difference between her and CJ is that she has learned to curtail that more than he has. His pitch is a runway train.

But, you don’t always get what you want. This is what we get for the judges saving Sam last week: Someone going home in Malaya who probably deserved to stick around more so than he did. She had bad moments, but also a number of good ones.

Despite the improved judging and song selection, there’s a part of this season now that is just feeling drab. Can we just get to the top 4 already for things to get interesting again? Grade: C-.
