Typically, we find these whole “celebrities react to random major event” articles to be incredibly annoying and not particularly worthy of that much discussion. So what makes this one different ? It’s because late-night TV has become almost an elite club that only a few people really understand. It’s like getting into that really prestigious country club: Hard to get into, and the membership is almost entirely old rich dudes.
Yes, we could continue complaining about the lack of diversity in late-night, but did you really think that CBS of all people was going to make a progressive hire? This is a network that could be airing three “NCIS” shows and a spin-off of “How I Met Your Mother” in the fall. If they find an idea, they stick to it until they completely drive it into the ground.
All this aside, Stephen Colbert is a great replacement for David Letterman in this instance in that he’s experienced, funny, and CBS already knows him well. He’s also extremely well-respected by his other late-night colleagues, based on some of the messages that have come in so far today.
