‘Veep’ season 3, episode 1 review: A wedding, a funeral, and a firing
Did “Veep” deliver with its first episode of season 3? If you loved the first two episodes of the show, then it’s pretty safe to say that you enjoyed this one, as well.
There was quite a bit that unfolded within this half-hour, but most of it served to further along what is the primary story of the year based on what we’ve seen: Selina Meyer going for the office of President! While she knew that POTUS was not planning a run for re-election, it wasn’t until the end of this episode when he readied a conference with the big news. This was a response to a leaked post written by Jonah that Dan then secretly spread around … which in turn lead to Jonah getting fired and most of the Veep’s office celebrating.
Is this the end of Jonah on the show? If it is, we’ll say that we will very much miss him. It’s hard to know just how many other people out there would echo that message, but the guy did bring some things to the table: He was an irritant, a nice asset for the sake of causing drama, and sometimes funny. We feel like you have to bring him back if you really want the balance of the show to still be there.
As for the comedic highlight of the entire hour, we’d say that even more than Selina’s pandering at a book signing, it was her giving Mike nearly the same exact speech at his wedding to Wendy that she used at a funeral earlier in the day.
There’s not much about “Veep” that is revolutionary at this point, and there are still few people we find likable. With all this being said, it’s still a funny show, and we’re interested in seeing where the story goes from here. Grade: B+.
