MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 4 spoilers: Is Jenna looking for a guy other than Matty?

It is not going to take very long at all for the romantic web on “Awkward” to become even more complicated. Are Jenna and Matty hooking up again? Sure, but that hardly means that they are exclusive or an item at all.

Rather, Jenna will spend at least part of this upcoming season looking at relationship possibilities with an older guy … or at least one who is in college. New showrunners Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler tell TVLine that her new pursuit is going to be a guy named Luke:

“As the end of high school approaches, Jenna decides she’s looking for a more mature guy.”

What’s also worth noting right now? That Bailey is no longer going to be a part of the equation. The underclassman was introduced near the end of season 3 as a romantic possibility for Matty, but she is one of the characters who is being written out for creative reasons. This is a little different than the Ming character, who is gone from the show after the actress asked to be allowed to move on. (We’ve seen this a lot lately with MTV stars, like Crystal Reed of “Teen Wolf.”)

We always worry anytime that a show comes on the air with a brand-new person (or people, in this case) steering the ship, mostly because you are seeing a product that has been significantly morphed beyond what the original intention was. This was never meant to be a show led by anyone other than creator Lauren Iungerich, and you have to find a way to both capture her vision and tone, while making the show your own. This did not work out for “Community” season 4, and we feel like it’s much harder to do successfully for a quirky comedy than a drama. We’ll just have to wait and see how this goes.
