‘How I Met Your Mother’: Complete series DVD will contain alternate ending

How I Met Your Mother -Well, “How I Met Your Mother” may have just pulled a “Mass Effect 3.”

For those of you who don’t catch the reference, this was a very popular video game that came out in the past few years that was the culmination of many years of great storytelling. Unfortunately, there was a major problem: Most people out there hated the ending. The outrage eventually led to the game’s developer releasing a new “extended” version of the ending, just to make sure that gamers felt like they got their money’s worth.

For “How I Met Your Mother,” though, the plan instead is to apparently release an entirely different ending to the series that, like “Mass Effect 3,” may silence some of the haters. However, the big difference is that rather than just add to an ending that is already there for the most part, this will give you an end to the series that is completely different than the one with Ted bringing Robin the blue French horn after telling his kids the story.

Show co-creator Carter Bays recently broke this new on Twitter, where he also expressed his reaction to some of the finale backlash:

“If you didn’t like the finale, I guess that happens. We tried something and it didn’t connect with you. I hope we’re still friends. So anyway, here’s a bit of news: 16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings. We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. We’re going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother.”

It was not clear whether or not the complete ninth season box set would also have this same material included. (Bays added that it’s “highly possible” that the series set will contain most of the 18 minutes of the finale that were left on the cutting-room floor.)

On one hand, this is a nice gesture for everyone who wanted to imagine Ted’s endgame being with Tracy and Tracy only. However, this also feels somewhat like “give us over $100 if you want to see the other ending.”

Also, Bays is really happy with the progress on “How I Met Your Dad” … which suddenly has a much harder road to getting picked up to series than it once did.
