Stephen Colbert responds to #CancelColbert controversy

Highlights -Stephen Colbert is not going to give in to the #CancelColbert trending topics … at all. As a matter of fact, he’s laughing more at all of the controversy. This started last week with his mockery of Washington Redskins owner Daniel Synder trying to act like his team name was not offensive, where he then went into a stereotypical Asian character by means of comparison. It was really Comedy Central tweeting something out of context that made this story far more controversial than it would otherwise be.

At the start of Monday night’s new episode of “The Colbert Report,” Stephen started off the show with a “dream” that his show was canceled, complete with post-Apocalyptic music and also scenery from “The Day After Tomorrow.” He then woke up wearing gear from the Washington football team while having a conversation with B.D. Wong … only for this to be a dream within a dream.

After this cold open, the show started and Colbert was largely ready to unload the same brand of “truthiness” that he has since the beginning:

“This was close! We almost lost me. I’m never going to take me for granted ever again …the interweb tried to swallow me whole but I am proud to say that I got lodged in its throat and it hacked me back up like a hastily-chewed chicken wing. I’m still here; the dark forces’ attempt to silence my message of core conservative principles mixed with youth friendly product placement have been thwarted.”

There was never any serious conversation about Colbert’s job security, even if some in the media were upset about his lack of an apology over what was from his standpoint clear satire. The real Colbert would be appalled by the Asian stereotype, and that is kind of the point.
