‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5 spoilers: See Ian Somerhalder’s Damon in the 1960s

Damon -Ready to hop into your “Vampire Diaries” time machine for a minute? We always enjoy the flashback episodes, mostly because you have literally a century and a half of good stuff to mine from the Salvatore brothers, and that means new characters and interesting avenues to explore that may have slipped through the cracks somehow.

This somehow apparently includes getting to see Ian Somerhalder’s Damon doing his best impression of the Fonz. The attached image here (via TV Guide) is courtesy of the show’s April 24 episode “Man of Fire,” which also happens to be the second episode back after the extended hiatus. As for why we are going back to this time period, executive producer Caroline Dries tells the site that it is ultimately just as much about Enzo as it is either Damon or his brother:

“We get to see Stefan and Damon for one night, but we [also] dig into Enzo’s story line too. He becomes the mini ‘bad’ of the season and we’re figuring out his motivation for why he’s in town. He’s going to make a number of enemies and he won’t do himself favors.”

This episode is also going to feature the introduction of Maggie, the true love for Enzo and his “one that got away.” Given what we have seen love do to some of the other characters in this series, we can only imagine what sort of impact it has on a guy who we have already seen be willing to kill people for almost next nothing. Enzo is not winning any “good influence” awards in the near future.
