NBC’s ‘Hannibal’ season 2, episode 4 review: The ballad of Bella Crawford

Torres -Hannibal” is a show that does like to shock you, mesmerize you, and then somehow, find a way to pull at your heartstrings. On the new episode Friday night, we certainly had quite a few of these feelings come into play.

First of all, let’s give it up to Gina Torres for a moment. The “Firefly” / “Suits” actress return this week as Jack Crawford’s wife Bella, a woman who was suffering beyond words. She was also somehow who was tormented in her own way by Dr. Lecter, which caused her to lash out while Jack was at her beside.

What do we make of these scenes? She is still alive, and we can only anticipate that this is going to set in motion a chain of events that will lead to the fight between Laurence Fishburne and Mads Mikkelsen’s characters a little later this season.

But hats off to Will this week for at least finally convincing someone in Beverly that his suspicions are to be taken seriously. Unfortunately for her, the problem with this is that she is now a step closer to meeting her own end. We loved the cutaway at the end of this episode of the gunfight that was ensuing between her and Hannibal in the basement. It’s pretty safe to assume that it does not end well for her, but with this show being horrifying at times already, there is not a frequent need to amplify the violence more. Well played, and a nice cliffhanger to what will be coming up next week.

This episode of “Hannibal” was a powerful one in so many ways: Great acting, stunning visuals, and a glimpse perhaps into the future. We did not have the flash-forward quite like we had during the premiere, but in a way we had just as many teasers of the future. Grade: B+.
