‘Person of Interest’ season 3, episode 17 review: Amy Acker leads the way in Root’s story
“Person of Interest” is a show that when it started out, really just revolved around a tiny handful of characters who were trying to fulfill the duties of the Machine. While we have lost some people along the way, we have also gained others … and Amy Acker’s Root is somewhere near the top of that list. She’s a character who seems at times insane, and others like the smartest person in the room. She has a connection to the Machine that, after all, no one else can replicate.
The first thing we have to do is give a nice little round of applause to whoever came up with the episode title this week of “/.” That was a nice little change-up that we definitely did not see coming, but so appropriate for her story for all the other web designers out there.
As for the story itself, we thought of it as a strange, fascinating war between Finch and Root as the two tried to handle being handed the same name. You didn’t have nearly as much of the other characters, and to be honest, this wasn’t really an episode were the stories of Reese and Shaw were that interesting. The dynamic between Acker and Michael Emerson was far more enthralling, as we had some more details about the past, their present, and also their future.
But the real news of the hour is simple: Samaritan. It is starting up, and that can only mean one thing: Trouble.
Also, a nice little shout-out to Colin Donnell, who was great in his part here from start to finish as Root took him through his paces. We still miss him as Tommy on “Arrow,” but are pleased to see he found his way to another great show. Grade: A-.
