‘The Walking Dead’ season 4, episode 14 review: Lizzie breaks; who dies?
Tonight’s “The Walking Dead” continued the recent trend of small, character-specific stories, but the difference between this one and some recent adventures is that Carol and Tyreese are hardly two characters that are considered at the top of the popularity charts.
Who thought that going into “The Grove” that these two characters were going to present to us the strongest episode perhaps of the entire spring season so far? It had been a long time since we had lost a reasonably-important character, and you knew that with Lizzie involved here, there was always potential for something nuts to happen. She’s just a sociopath; there is no other way to explain it. We don’t know why Carol especially thought that leaving this zombie-obsessed girl alone with Mika was a good idea at all.
The death of Mika was therefore rather sad and predictable. Lizzie was ultimately the one responsible for so many of the problems at the prison (i.e. the mice), and there is no way you can really rely on her for anything. We understand those yelling that Carol or Tyreese should have just killed her right away, but they are not animals. They can’t just take a human life without serious thought and consideration.
This is why the two had to have a sit-down conversation about Lizzie before ultimately deciding to do the only thing that they had to do for the sake of their own survival: Shooting her in the head while telling her to “look at the flowers.” As of all of this was ot insane or devastating enough, Carol then admitted to Tyreese that she was the one responsible for killing Karen. She didn’t do it out of malice, but to do what she felt was right at that time.
At least Carol did not die via her actions; Tyreese admitted that he was not going to forget what happened, but he forgives her … and this sad, painful story known as “The Grove” is now over. What a devastating, remarkable hour of TV this was. Grade: A.
