‘True Detective’ season 2: Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Rogen star in new ‘trailer’
Are Jimmy Kimmel and Seth MacFarlane going to be the new stars of HBO’s “True Detective”? The odds are better of the Yellow King coming back into the picture again. But with that being said, what these two guys came up with on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (which is in Austin this week for SXSW) was still very entertaining.
In this new “season 2 trailer,” Rogen and Kimmel play versions of Rust Cohle and Martin Hart fighting crime in Austin, and trying to uncover whether or not there is a monster out there that they are capable of stopping. There are jokes about beer cans, a slap fight, and also a rousing rendition of karaoke when it is unveiled that Rogen, in what seems to be a deep, introspective moment, is actually just quoting the lyrics to the classic “Time After Time.”
We don’t want to be a complete and total spoil-sport here, but we will say here that the ending is somewhat lame. It just seems like for a spoof that uses so much imagination and sharp writing throughout, having things descend into the two guys pretending to make out is pretty lame and obvious. It would have been much more interesting if they had used something else present on the show (like the Maggie character) to turn it around on its head.
Still, applause to Kimmel for recognizing just how great of a show this is, and for beating Jimmy Fallon to the punch here, given that the new “Tonight Show” host is typically the master of these sort of TV spoof videos. Having a guy like Rogen in your Rolodex almost certainly has to help.
