‘Mad Men’ season 7 teaser: Is Don Draper flying high? (Video)
Typically, it is not “Mad Men” tradition to really tease much of anything about a season (or even an episode) prior to it airing. Instead, what we tend to see are hints dropped in the assorted promotional material put out by AMC that normally don’t make much sense. Whether you are talking about posters or promo videos, the show has set up some of its central themes effectively, whether it be Don Draper’s fall from grace, or the facade that he has put on for those around him.
So what should you make of the first teaser for the show’s April 13 return? In terms of content, the only thing that you see is Don seemingly getting off a plane after a flight. Does this mean that Jon Hamm’s character has already landed another new job, or is back with the very firm that put him on “leave”?
Another interesting theory in our mind is that Don has finally landed, or arrived, at the peace of mind that he has long been looking for. So much of the show’s past (even the theme song) have revolved around the character’s fall. Now, he is finally on the ground with at least reasonably triumphant music playing behind him. We don’t really get the sense that this is a sad Don at all in the promo, and we see the airplane more as symbolism rather than something that is actually going to be a part of the show. (This probably made for an expensive commercial, but given AMC has a show here all about advertising, it’s pretty darn important for them to have a grade-A promotional campaign.)
What do you think about this “Mad Men” preview? As always, we want to hear all of your theories in the comment box below. For a quick look back at how we got here, AMC has put together a nice video (which you can view here) showing off the journey of Don Draper from start to finish.
