‘Call the Midwife’ season 4 official; BBC renews series after season 3 success

“Call the Midwife” may be the smash hit of Britain that is really not getting the attention it deserves elsewhere. The show routinely gets huge ratings, even more so than at times another worldwide smash in “Downton Abbey.” Therefore, you cannot really be too shocked right now that the BBC have officially commissioned a season 4 even before season 3 came to a close.

In a statement this week, the network suggested that for the first time, the show is going to actually move forward beyond the 1950s and into a new decade:

“It is 1960 in London’s East End. A new decade dawns, and with it come different and exciting challenges for the team at Nonnatus House.”

So what does this mean for some of the show’s cast members? At the moment, that is something that is still a little bit up in the air, and will depend heavily on what the writers decide to do with the characters moving forward. Given what we saw with Alec already this season, it is pretty obvious to us that they do not have any fears whatsoever to kill anyone off or write them off the show. After all, this is a show that basically gave Jessica Raine nothing to do for two episodes just because it suited the story that it wanted to tell.

“Call the Midwife” should return to BBC with season 4 in 2015; as for those of you watching it in America, the third season will premiere starting on Sunday, March 30. PBS may make its own decision regarding whether to bring the show back.
