TV quick hits: ‘Single Ladies’ canceled; pilot news with ‘Law & Order: SVU’ star, others

Law & Order: SVU logoThere are a couple of big stories to discuss here in this edition of TV quick hits, and we’ll start things off with something that always does make us sad to discuss: A cancellation.

After a nice little run on VH1, “Single Ladies” has been put out to pasture. We don’t really feel like there is a chance for it to be revived anywhere else either, though, and it is a pretty big blow to the network’s scripted content. Most of the time, their bread and butter comes in such stuff as “Basketball Wives” and “Couples Therapy,” which can at least be much more painful to watch than most of the other programming with  script.

Now for the rest of our stories, we’re going into pilot conversation.

“The Odd Couple” casting – Remember Sarah Baker from “Go On”? Matthew Perry loved her enough that he wants to bring her onto his pilot for “The Odd Couple.” She will will the assistant to Oscar for the CBS project, which was recently ordered to pilot.

“Irreversible” – This pilot stars Perry’s “Friends” co-star David Schwimmer, and we’ve learned now that sketch comedy veteran Jessica Knappett is going to play his love interest. These two are a self-absorbed couple who get each other in all sorts of conflicts.

“Battle Creek” – Dean Winters of “Law & Order: SVU” has joined the David Shore – Vince Gilligan drama as Detective Russ Agnew, one of the tough guys at the center of the show. This cast in full includes the likes of Kal Penn (House), Janet McTeer (The White Queen), Edward Fordham Jr., and Aubrey Dollar. This show seems very much like a slam dunk thanks to Gilligan’s involvement, even if Shore is the primary showrunner..
