Ratings: ‘Survivor: Cagayan’ premiere up versus 2013; ‘Chicago PD’ a hit

While there is a good bit to complain about when you look at some of the ratings in general from TV Wednesday night, there are still some pretty significant victors … and “Survivor” is one of them.

Remember all the jokes about this show being a dinosaur, and it having no real relevance anymore? You always hear them, but the show was #3 on the night with a 2.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, just a tenth up below “American Idol.” Based on the half-hour data that we’ve seen, it also seems likely that it will rise to a 2.6 when the final numbers are released. Typically, we would thin that the 9:00 p.m. airing boosted the overall figure, since the second hour of two-hour shows tend to do better than the first; however, in this case both the 8:00 and 9:00 hours averaged the same rating. That is up a tenth in the demo from the premiere of “Survivor Caramoan: Fans vs. Favorites,” and further proof that there is just as much interest in new people as there are returning players.

There are a few other ratings notes here worth mentioning:

1. With a 2.2 rating in the demo, even against good competition, “Chicago PD” is practically a hit now for NBC. Imagine a season 2 renewal coming well before the 11th hour, whereas “Revolution” (1.3) is almost sure to be canceled.

2. Things are not looking great for “The Tomorrow People,” either, given that its 0.5 continues to put it in the bottom half of The CW’s ratings. Moving it to Monday nights is also not going to help.

3. We actually liked “Mixology” more than most, but its 1.8 rating in the demo is not a good sign for its premiere. We expect at least a 20% drop next week, and that puts it immediately in “likely to be canceled” territory.
