‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 10 spoilers: Jessica Capshaw on Arizona’s ‘selfish’ journey
With “Grey’s Anatomy” finally coming back on the air next week after an extended hiatus, that means an opportunity for us to finally get some details on what was going through the minds of some of the cast members.
With that in mind, let’s turn to Jessica Capshaw for a minute. She plays a woman in Arizona who has not exactly been the kindest as of late. As a matter of fact, she has made at least a few decisions that are downright selfish in some ways, as she has hooked up in some manner with Leah and has not considered the feelings of Callie nearly as much as she could have.
But one of the most interesting things about this arc is that even Capshaw herself recognizes the sort of behavior patterns of her character, and is not someone so attached that she is defending her in any way. Take a look at her comments below via TVLine, which we find to be super-fascinating on a number of levels:
“I don’t know if it’s ever OK for someone to be selfish. Perhaps there’s a time and place to be self-centered, but I think selfish never really wins the race. But Arizona has always been so upstanding. She’s always had such a great moral center and a happy-go-lucky attitude — nothing ever sort of challenged her likability. And when she lost her leg, instead of being someone who focused on the fact that she survived, she was completely focused on what she had lost. I don’t know why she couldn’t get over that, because it seems like a no brainer, like, ‘You’re alive! Why wouldn’t you just be thankful your alive?’ She couldn’t! And I think it led her down a road to do everything wrong and see what that felt like.”
While it’s not OK to be selfish, it is at the same time real to be selfish, and that is what has made the Arizona character so much more interesting. She has not been painted into any sort of box at all this season, and this complexity could in the end make her much more relatable and easier to root for.
