Last night, “True Detective” offered up what may be one of the greatest episodes of the series so far. As a matter of fact, it may be one of the greatest episodes of any show of the entire year. While there were many great moments in this hour to discuss, almost none of them really managed to match the heightened emotion and greatness of Rust Cohle in the interrogation room after hearing the words “Yellow King” uttered by a man hoping for a deal.
Now for many who have watched each individual episode only once, hearing these words at first may have produced only a slight reaction. While they may sound familiar, they have not been played out just yet to the extent where they have become some sort of chant or recurring image. This is what makes the video below so valuable. In it, show executive producer Nic Pizzolatto goes through some of the individual components that made up this event, and also cites the work of Robert W. Chambers as one of the influences behind this big moment on the show really coming together.
All in all, this is a fascinating bit of information that better helps us to understand some of what is coming up on the show the rest of the season, which we certainly expect to be all sorts of intense moments. With Cohle now as somewhat of a suspect in everything that is going on, that only adds to the intrigue about who you can really trust and rely on with this show.
