Are you watching ‘House of Cards’ season 2, and how are you doing it?
Valentine’s Day means many things for many people. For many romantics out there, it’s a chance to tell that special someone how you really feel. For cynics, it’s their chance to sit around and complain all day.
But for people with Netflix, there is likely a very singular goal in mind right now for February 14: To consume “House of Cards.” A lot of “House of Cards.” The series will technically be out already by the time you read this, as it will be available as of 3:01 a.m. Eastern time. First of all, we want to know the diehard fans who are really willing to be up that late to watch something they can see the next morning. Even President Obama, diehard enough to tweet about the show, isn’t even doing that.
What is the appeal of watching this show? Great entertainment, Kevin Spacey, and a little bit of the magic touch of David Fincher. It’s not difficult to see or to understand why the series is so popular. From a TV journalistic standpoint, however, “House of Cards” remains a conundrum. How do you cover a series that everyone watches at different times? This sounds like a total case of #MediaProblems, but at the same time, this is the same issue the show runs into on a larger scale. You get great entertainment, especially for impatient people, with the model that Netflix has set up. However, you are also trading that off a little bit with not getting that same sort of community experience of getting to watch and enjoy everything at the same time. Would people be as crazy about “Breaking Bad” if it had a similar model? We do not quite know.
