‘Drop Dead Diva’ canceled by Lifetime (and this time, with finality)
Unfortunately, fans of “Drop Dead Diva” know this story all too well. But unfortunately, the news this time is definitive that the upcoming sixth season of the Lifetime series will indeed be the last.
This news was first published by The Hollywood Reporter, and it comes two seasons after the show was canceled a first time, and then brought back after it was figured out how the show could continue while saving the studio a good bit of cash in the process. This means that the upcoming sixth season premiering next month will in fact contain a series finale.
While this may be a cause for great sadness among fans, there really is still a pair of reasons to be happy. For example, the show is getting an opportunity to actually wrap up the story in a way in which it wants to, rather than having a series finale that is akin to getting the rug pulled out from under them. Also, it is two more seasons of a show than many fans first thought that they were going to get. Any cable series that manages to actually last for six full seasons has to be considered a major success. Even some of the greatest ones in history didn’t get more than a sixth or seventh year.
There is one other interesting way to read this news, given that “The Client List” and “Army Wives” were also each canceled: Lifetime really must have a ton of faith in both “Witches of East End” and “Devious Maids” to be hits for them for a long time. They are suddenly now the anchors of the network, even though they only recently came into existence.
