Super Bowl commercials: Johnny Galecki stars in Hyundai ad ‘Nice’

The funny thing about this Hyundai commercial for Super Bowl XLVIII is simply that it stars Johnny Galecki, but it may actually take you a minute or two to realize that it is actually the star of “The Big Bang Theory” in the ad. Unless you watched “Roseanne,” odds are that you have probably only known the guy for wearing nerdy glasses and talking about how much he loves Penny.

Oh, there is one funny thing about this ad that we feel the need to address now: In real life, Johnny drives something that is so much more expensive than a Hyundai. We have seen it, and it costs more than life itself. (This is what happens when you’ve been on two incredibly successful sitcoms. We actually don’t know why he felt the need to do an ad at all given his salary.)

What worked – This is a pretty funny, charming commercial that basically just shows a series of pretty terrible things that happen to Galecki’s character while trying to converse with a woman on the road. We wouldn’t say that any of them are laugh-out-loud hilarious, but they are all worthy of a little giggle.

What didn’t – Really, you could argue that the ad didn’t make a whole lot of sense when it comes to what it actually did to sell the Hyundai … except for having a famous person drive it. But with that being said, we really cannot say that we care all that much.

Grade: B+. This was not a perfect ad by any means, but it was pleasant. Sometimes when you get a little later in the game, all you really want to see is something that entertains you. This did that, we will therefore not complain.
