Super Bowl commercials: M&Ms go to Russia with new ad (with same results)

The latest -It has become a bit of a Super Bowl tradition over the years for M&Ms to deliver a big ad for the game, and more often than not, these ads are some of the most entertaining of the entire game. Two years ago, we had a chocolate candy shaking it to LMFAO’s hit “Sexy and I Know It.” Then, last year you had “Glee” star Naya Rivera making an appearance as a woman who was ready to eat Red alive.

This time around, Red did not make an appearance at all; instead, we had Yellow making a big comeback as he arrives for some sort of Russian party. The unfortunate news for him? He did not realize that he was not a guest of honor; he was the snack.

What worked – The premise of the ad was easy to understand, and one of the main selling points here is that it may have taken a little bit of time for everyone to realize that this was an ad for the candy company. It was a pretty smart way, at least, to keep people attentive.

What didn’t – The main punch-line here was so predictable, we almost feel in some ways that this is the same ad that we have seen a dozen of times already. We also thought that they would try to go for a little bit more star power, even if you can argue that the candy here is the star.

Grade: C. We’ve just seen the candy company do so much better over the years than this one. We laughed lightly at the very end, but in the past we’ve rolled around on the floor after watching these.
