‘Call the Midwife’ season 3, episode 3 review: Stella’s story; Jenny and Alec’s move

“Call the Midwife” returned to BBC One on Sunday night with another eventful episode, as there was almost everything from more troubled births to surprising proposals to references to “My Fair Lady.”

One of the biggest stories of the entire episode, though, was finding out more about Stella, a young woman who was going through quite the terrible time. She is the woman in prison, having to go through the endless amount of suffering that goes along with having to let go a child very quickly. Just to make matters worse, she was so interested in keeping secrets that she nearly supplied false information for the birth records … even if her intentions may have been at least somewhat more pure than it may have felt at times.

Just to make matters even worse, finding a home for Stella’s child was almost impossible when it comes to her record, and also who the father of the child was. Was there a way to move Stella forward, and keep her with her child? In what was a miracle for the show, that is what happened courtesy of a last-ditch effort to find her a place where she could actually have a fresh start.

Elsewhere, Jenny started to face some serious emotional pressure courtesy of Alec, who seemed to be more than ready to move forward with his relationship with her. The problem? She was not quite feeling the same. She tried her absolute hardest for a little while in order to try and keep from responding, and eventually Alec caught on to it. The two parties are still together, and appear to be making more of an effort to take things slowly for the time being.

All in all, this was one of the more eventful episodes of the season; plus, it was far less of a tear-jerker compared to some that we have seen in recent weeks. Grade: B+.
