‘House of Lies’ season 3, episode 3 review: Kristen Bell steals the show with Jeannie’s big move
After spending the first two episodes of season 3 with episodes that were very much geared around Marty and his life, Sunday night’s new episode of “House of Lies” did feel to us very Jeannie-centric. We saw a lot of her at Galweather trying to showcase some of her newfound sense of authority, and we also saw plenty of her wheeling and dealing when it comes to Marty.
When it comes to putting on a tough face, nobody does it better 99% of the time than Jeannie. She at least seems to believe leading into next week’s episode that she now has all the power: She has Marty eating out of her hand, and she basically managed to detonate Galweather using some very subtle manipulation as she was set to team up with Don Cheadle’s character yet again … for “business” reasons.
This is what we are somewhat interested in seeing unfold the rest of the way this season: Just how much of these reasons really have to do with business. You knew that the writers were going to have to find a way to pair up Marty and Jeannie again, since they are the cornerstones of the show. Also, it had to be a way in which Kristen Bell (who was amazing in this episode) could feel like she was further empowered. She was the one who needed a reason to make a move rather than Marty.
We still wonder whether or not her heart led her in part to make this decision, just as we wonder just how much power she really has here at the end of the day. Marty’s a smart guy, and he’ll try to find a way to get the upper hand again. This at least set up an amazing back-and-forth, and something that we hope remains for the rest of the season. Grade: A-.
