‘Call the Midwife’ season 3, episode 2 preview: ‘Freeing mothers from fear’

In looking back at the premiere of “Call the Midwife” on the BBC last weekend, there were a mixture of great moments and also difficult ones. This is a show that is extremely well-done, but also at times difficult to watch just because of the depressing nature of the show.

At times in the premiere, you saw the struggle that happened for some of these women as they were met with constant remidners that in this era, it was really impossible to have it all in both a career and a family. That will bleed over somewhat into Sunday’s episode, where we have (as per the attached image here) what looks to be some sort of seminar about “freeing mothers from fear” highlighted by Cynthia. But is anyone really capable of teaching anyone how to be free from fear, especially for a woman in the 1950s? We wonder. We also wonder how many people are going to actually stop by the really listen to what Cynthia has to say; if there is one thing that does translate so well across any time period, it is that many people don’t bother to recognize that there is a problem that needs to be dealt with until the last minute.

Much of the rest of Sunday’s episode is under wraps, but anticipate some more relationship woes for Jenny, a difficult patient who is trying to raise a family on her own, and many of the characters who are still struggling to deal with some of their new surroundings. This should at least be worth a discussion after the fact.
